  • Living in Ku-ring-gai

The beautiful, leafy suburbs of Ku-ring-gai offer a wonderful lifestyle and convenience for families, young people and retires attracted to the area by large residential blocks and the mix of traditional, heritage and contemporary homes.

Each suburb has a village atmosphere yet offers the convenience of excellent public transport, access to some of Sydney's best private and public schools, hospitals, shopping centres, boutique shopping along with numerous parks and bushland for recreational activities.
Ku-ring-gai is attracting young professional couples seeking a tranquil, safe haven with wide open space to raise their families and enjoy a quality lifestyle. The area has a regular train service providing an easy trip into city.

Roseville cinema offers movies for the market often screening the latest European Films. Hornsby Cinema offers the latest film releases catering to all ages.
The area is well serviced by Shopping Centres located in St Ives and Gordon whilst Hornsby Westfield, Macquarie Centre and Chatswood Shopping Centres are only a short drive away. Smaller retailers, gourmet and specialists shops abound in the area along with a wide selection of excellent cafes and restaurants.

The beautiful natural environment is a major feature of this area. Many larger older trees line the streets providing an amazing spectacle of colours in Autumn and Spring. Many of the grand older homes and gardens which are a feature of these suburbs are heritage listed and often open through National Trusts or their gardens are open to the public through events such as the "Garden Day" organised by Knox Grammar School.

Ku-ring-gai National Park and Bobbin Head Water Ways are havens for lovers of the great outdoors. Bobbin Head is ideal for a family day out, with picnic tables and lots of open space for outdoor sports. There's also a cafe and kiosk on site, located in the building which was once the Bobbin Head Inn in the 1930's. There is a marina where you can hire a boat, or moor your own and enjoy lunch in the Marina Cafe. The southern end of Bobbin Head offers a leisurely stroll on a mangrove boardwalk, leading onto a rainforest track, a treat for bushwalkers.

The Ku-ring-gai Local Council offers its residents many community activities, volunteer groups, recreational activities, libraries, markets plus many other services. Ku-ring-gai has so much to offer, whether it is for young families, singles or retirees, it's no wonder that there is such a strong stable demand for real estate in this area. It’s got it all.

  • History of Ku-ring-gai

The name Ku-ring-gai comes from the Kuring-Gai (or Guringai) Aboriginal Language group who inhabited the area from Port Jackson north across Broken Bay and beyond Brisbane Water. The word Kuring-Gai can be loosely translated as meaning " belonging to the Aborigines". This name was later adopted by the Ku-ring-gai Shire Council, the area's first local government authority.

One of first white settlers was William Henry who, in around 1814, farmed on land next to the Lane Cove River. The early population consisted of itinerant workers, timber-getters, farmers and orchardists who were often self-sufficient and lived in isolated communities.

Major transport routes by land and water were in place by the mid-1800s. The construction of railway in 1890 and the introduction of local government to the area succeeded in transforming a series of isolated farming communities into a line of sought-after suburbs.

The Shire of Ku-ring-gai was initially constituted with six Counsellors in March 1906. A small Shire Council building was built in 1911 on the main road in Gordon, replacing the temporary offices that had been in the grounds of St John's Church.

The interwar period saw vast improvements in infrastructure and a period of urban consolidation. With the increase in building applications, local government needed to expand. In 1928 the Shire was converted into a municipality with four wards each represented by three aldermen. The original section of the present Council Chambers was opened in 1928.

Almost all of Ku-ring-gai hosted major Australian Defence agencies and bases and a number of community organisations were formed to help with the war effort. Amongst these were the Ku-ring-gai  Woman War Workers who supplied "comforts" such as knitted goods to soldiers fighting abroad, and the Ku-ring-gai Voluntary Aid Detachment who cared for sick and wounded soldiers on their return.
The period between 1950 and 1980 was marked by doubling in Ku-ring-gai's population from roughly 50,000 to 100,000 as a result of post-war marriages and immigration. The increase since 1980 to around 110,000 has been much less rapid.

Over the years the Council has built or supported local amenities to service the growing population, including four libraries, two public golf courses, an arts centre, youth centre, Olympic swimming pool and many other community sporting facilities.
The Ku-ring-gai of today is a culturally diverse society that still retains much of its unique natural and built heritage.
